South Australian B M X History

40 posts in this topic

Hi all,

In my quest to find out information on Supa Roo I haven't been able to unearth much about the History of BMX in South Australia.

Clubs and Riders have come and gone though there isn't very much documented in either text or pictures.

So to start the ball rolling please post here your stories, memories, pictures and information on your South Australian BMX experiences.

Pics and info on the history of the following Clubs would also be greatly appreciated.

Wow, I raced on a stack of those tracks....some I'd forgotten about!! I raced in the Iron Triangle Challenge in 88. I loved the Port Pirie track - it was so fast!! Port Augusta was jump city and the start gate was so high!!!

That's a cool pic Hup! That double berm was always tricky! If you stuffed the entry you always shagged the exit!! From memory after the exit of the second berm there was a big dip - and you could get serious air from it! Is that right!

BMX BOOMS IN SA

Article written by Des Pearce for the South Australian Allsports News

BMX racing is set to boom in SA.

Cross Keys BMX Club held its first double meeting on May 29. The day session started at 1 pm and the first ever night meeting was held from 6.30 pm until 9.30.

Club president and commentator, Fred Dennis was elated with the roll-up of over 200 competitors, which included a team of champion skid kids led by 20 year old Gavin Nugent, Joffre Pearce (15), Trevor Shepard (15), Brenton Cua (12), Darren Karrutze (12) and Trevor Jenkins (10).

All took ribbons in their various age groups, with Pearce taking top honors with the Supa Roo racing machine.

Pearce won the feature event of the day Champion of Champion race sponsored by Exeter Cycles of Semaphore, who donated a pair of Z Rim high flange wheels valued at $80 to the winner.

The race consisted of the top riders from the three grades, over 14, over 15, and over 16.

It was a hard fought race from the drop of the gate. As they raced down the hill into the first berm, Shane Fountain hit the lead, but soon lost it to Pearce, who slipped up on the inside. Going out of the berm over the two whoopy doos, Pearce edged half a length clear but around the second berm Fountain drew level.

The two riders stuck to one and other in neck and neck fight out. Down the long straight, Pearce managed to break away and the race looked to be all over going into the last burm.

How ever Fountain shot through on the inside to hit the front and as they headed to the table top, Pearce put his Supa Roo to the full test.

As he bounded up to the table top, he collided with Fountain, putting him over the side and out of the race, just 10 meters from the finish and what a finish!

Pearce was presented with the wheels from Colin Woolfenden of Exeter Cycles. Joffre Pearce is the current Intermediate Australian and World Master Cycle Speedway Champion, as well as being the current SA over 15 BMX Champion.

Jason Horley (14) of Clapham, who is sponsored by Euro-sports, has the potential to be a top BMX star. Jason already the 14 year age group champion has a clean cut style that catches the eye.

Jason picked up two blue ribbons at the big meeting and looks set for a big year. He entertained the crowd with his high flying jumps over the table top while keeping full control of his machine.

BMX racing owes a Mr. and Mrs. Rick Coby a pat on the back for getting the sport of the ground in SA.

Racing is on every Saturday at the Cross Keys track, the program starting at 1pm. All are welcome.
