A few guy at the local club use 5-10's & love them.
I have been a fan of the Vans mountain design shoe with the padded ankle support plus lace savers. They are very hard to find but they are a top shoe.
Next year I will be using the Shinamo SH AM40 BMX shoe. Its basically the same as the SPD version without the SPD.
It comes with a 2nd slim innersol insert if you want them to be rather stiff & also has the same high inner ankle protection.
Have a look at the TBSM website they have them & several of the 5-10's for sale.
Not sure how they compete price wise for the 5-10's but it worth a look.
Pricess include shipping as well on most shoes.

No shoe on the market can compete with 5-10's when it comes to riding with flat pedals, they grip your pedal like nothing else.
I've tried all sorts over the years like Vans,DX,Nike 6.0's etc...all good shoes but they're not 5-10's.
I've been using them for about 3 years now to ride DH with and race BMX more recently and I have never slipped on the pedals with these on and have the opposite problem where if you place your foot in the wrong position it's hard to move back where it should be, BUT the added grip usually also means I can still be confident that my foot will stay planted and not slip even when 3/4's off the pedal.
I swear by my 5-10's.

Thanks for the advice fellas!
They both look like great shoes and im sure the 5-10's and Shimanos are going to be better than my old school vans.
Now the hard part....i just have to choose

Was just pondering the same question....

Glad I was able to help steer you towards them, I reckon they get grippier too as they wear in.
